NEDERLAND CONTAINER RESIDENCE

NEDERLAND CONTAINER RESIDENCE
Greetings from Colorado! 🙂

Today we are looking at a house that is literally on the cutting edge… of a cliff! The architects at Studio H:T and Andrew McMullin, the home owner, built this modern home high in Nederland, Colorado. Andrew McMullin is said to have gotten the idea while driving across Wyoming, listening to the Jack Kerouac book “On the Road,” and observing a train hauling a long line of containers. “I thought, ‘I could build a house with them,’ ” said McMullin one frigid morning in his concrete-floored house. When the winds reach 100 mph, it is hard to hear anything but the wind.

Built in 2010, this house is 1517 square feet.  ArchDaily.com says “This project questions the need for excessive space and challenges occupants to be efficient. Two shipping containers saddlebag a taller common space that connects local rock outcroppings to the expansive mountain ridge views. The containers house sleeping and work functions while the center space provides entry, dining, living and a loft above. The loft deck invites easy camping as the platform bed rolls between interior and exterior. The project is planned to be off-the-grid using solar orientation, passive cooling, green roofs, pellet stove heating and photovoltaics to create electricity.”

When I start building my own shipping container home, I am not sure if on the edge of a cliff is my #1 choice. I do love the way that Andrew McMullin and his roommate have the spacious common area in the middle though! 🙂
